Upcoming French Cultural Events

April 25 - 27 @ Paramount Picture Studios, 5555 Melrose Avenue, Los Angeles

Paris Photo Los Angeles, the US edition of the world’s celebrated art fair for works created in the photographic medium, will take place at Paramount Pictures Studios on April 25th-27th offering the ideal setting to explore how artists have been and are using photography and moving image in their work in the 20th and 21st centuries.

One year after the end of Ceci n'est pas..., the French Mission for Culture and Higher Education is to proud to be a partner of Sound and Vision: the Conversations an event part of this second edition of Paris Photo Los Angeles.

Ceci n'est pas... will bring Clément Cheroux and Jean-Luc Moulène to this event organized by curator Douglas Fogle.

April 21 - 28 @ The Directors Guild Theater Complex, 7920 Sunset Blvd., Los Angeles

City of Lights, City of Angels, the yearly week of French film premieres in Los Angeles, will take place April 21 to April 28 in Hollywood. The 18th line up will be announced April 1st at 6:00 pm in Beverly Hills. Full program will be available here.

VISUAL ARTS

Until April 27 @ LACMA, Hammer Building, Level 3

French artist Lise Sarfati captured the homes of writer and filmmaker Marguerite Duras only days after her death. The portfolio title, Post-Factum, from the Latin for “after the fact,” becomes a most fitting tribute to Duras.

Don't miss this exhibition at the Los Angeles County Museum of Art which ends on April 27.

April 14 - June 28 @ 18th Street Art Center, 1639 18th Street, Santa Monica

As part of 18th Street Arts Center’s core program, the Artist Labs series, Spanish-born, Los Angeles-based artist Patricia Fernández further develops her explorations of the geographic history that underpins generations of displacement and repression in Spain beginning with Franco’s dictatorship. In her project Points of Departure (between Spain and France), Fernández investigates narratives from her land of origin through a series of walks over the Pyrenees.

After his inclusion in the exhibition LOST (in LA) from December 2012 to January 2013, Julien Prévieux continues his collaboration with Fahrenheit. The young French artist will come to LA from mid April to mid June 2013 to work on his new project at Fahrenheit.

Sonos Studio presents various films and associated ephemera guiding visitors through a musical narrative close to Sonos’ heart – the legacy of Jamaican dancehall. Visitors can make their own “dubs” via a custom iPad app, while King Tubby’s original sound system, fully restored, will be exhibited for the first time in the US.

The exhibition is curated by Seb Carayol, a noted French-born curator and expert in sound system culture.

The Center for the Arts of Performance at UCLA brings The Suit to Los Angeles. Renowned theater and film director Peter Brook and the French Théâtre des Bouffes du Nord brings us a music-filled adaptation of a story by South African writer Can Themba. The Suit is a tragic tale of betrayal and resentment as a scorned husband takes out his anger, pain and frustration on his wife.

Address Unknown is the novel published just before the outbreak of World War II, written as a series of letters between a Jewish art dealer living in San Francisco and his business partner who had returned to Germany in 1932. It is credited with exposing, early on, the dangers of Nazism to the American public. Two exceptionnal representations with French actors Patrick Timsit and Thierry Lhermitte.

French psyche-punk rock band La Femme will be performing at The Summit Music Hall in Denver on April 6 and at the Roxy Theatre in Los Angeles on April 19.

After their performances in New York and at South by Southwest (SXSW), the band which is the new indie scene favorite, is touring for the first time on the West Coast.

The French Mission for Culture and Higher Education in partnership with the American Cinémathèque is proud to organize an event celebrating the centenary of Romain Gary's birth. Gary, one of the 20th century's most celebrated writers, was also a Consul General of France in Los Angeles.

The event will include a screening of two films based on novels by Gary and an intervention by Princeton professor and translator David Bellos.

The Hammer Museum presents Tea and Morphine: Women in Paris, 1880 to 1914 on view January 26 – May 18, 2014. The exhibition draws on the Elisabeth Dean Collection of French prints, a major promised gift to the UCLA Grunwald Center for the Graphic Arts, as well as the Grunwald’s existing holdings to explore fin-de-siècle representations of women. While women were often exalted and idealized in French graphic arts of the period, the exhibition explores how grittier images, whether of morphine addicts or prostitutes, began to dramatize a more nuanced and often troubling range of female experience.
