FLAX (France Los Angeles Exchange) presents Fahrenheit, an exhibition space and residency program.

Far and High is the inaugural group exhibition at FAHRENHEIT — an interrelated residency program and space dedicated to exhibitions, performances, film programs and talks, initiated by FLAX (France Los Angeles Exchange) and developed by director and curator Martha Kirszenbaum. The exhibitions showcases works by Laure Prouvost, David Douard, Felix Gonzalez-Torres, Alicja Kwade, Tamara Henderson, David Gilbert and Vincent Ganivet.

Produced by Art Production Fund for P3Studio, "If the game is the art, is chance the artist?" is the site-specific work of French, New-York based artist Alexis Dahan. The work deals with the concept of chance through various multi-media work for the P3Studio residency. Dahan pays homage to the artistic tradition of using chance in the creative process, from the Dada movement to John Cage. Guests are invited to sit down and play with the artist in a collaborative performance.

The installation is open every day 6 pm to 10 pm except on Mondays and Tuesdays.

Acclaimed company Les Ballets de Monte-Carlo returns at the Segerstrom Center for the Arts with the American premiere of Jean-Christophe Maillot's Swan Lake. The choreographer reinvents the ballet classic with the help of French writer and winner of the prix Goncourt in 1990, Jean Rouaud.

With influences ranging from Mozart to jazz, Ravel's Piano Concerto is performed by Alexandre Tharaud, who possesses "fingertips with the force of nature," according to The New York Times and conducted by Thierry Fischer. Plus, Berlioz's Suite from Romeo and Juliet.

François Chouchan's Salon de Musiques is back this month featuring renowned violinist Guillaume Sutre who is also the Director of Chamber Music at the UCLA School of Music. He will be joined by Soprano Elissa Johnston, cellist Tim Landauer and pianist Steven Vanhauwaert who will be performing music by three German romantis, Liszt, Schumann and Scharwenka. The evening will be followed by a buffet with French champagne.

BOOKS AND CONFERENCES

Different dates throughout California

March 20 2014 is the International Day of Francophonie! On this occasion, and to celebrate the speaking of French everywhere, the universities of California are holding different events throughout the month. The Francophone Center of the University of Southern California (USC) partners up with the French Mission for Culture and Higher Education on March 11 for a day full of events, from noon until 9.00 pm.

California State University, Long Beach will hold its own event with the participation of the French Mission on March 22 from 9.30 until 2.30 pm.

The University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA) will be holding an event on April 2 and the University of California, Irvine another one on April 23. We'll make sure to keep you posted about these events as the dates approach!

François Ghebaly is opening a new 12,000 sq./ft. space in Downtown Los Angeles, at 2245 E Washington Blvd. After three years in Culver City, the gallery is expanding into the most exciting new art district in the city. The new venue was built in 1942 and has been remodeled under the supervision of architect François Perrin.

The Cherry and Martin Gallery will present works by Jennifer Boysen and Noam Rappaport in context with pieces from the radical French painting movement Supports/Surfaces. In addition to artists like Louis Cane, Daniel Dezeuze, Noël Dolla, and Claude Vialata, from the 1960s and 1970s French Supports/Surfaces movement, the show will present important works by figures like Jean-Marc Meurice and Pierre Buraglio.

The Hammer Museum presents Tea and Morphine: Women in Paris, 1880 to 1914 on view January 26 – May 18, 2014. The exhibition draws on the Elisabeth Dean Collection of French prints, a major promised gift to the UCLA Grunwald Center for the Graphic Arts, as well as the Grunwald’s existing holdings to explore fin-de-siècle representations of women. While women were often exalted and idealized in French graphic arts of the period, the exhibition explores how grittier images, whether of morphine addicts or prostitutes, began to dramatize a more nuanced and often troubling range of female experience.
