SEGUIN, TX | FEBRUARY 7-MARCH 7

Texas Lutheran University will be screening a series of 6 French films, presented in the framework of the Tournées French Film Festival from February 7 to March 7, 2019: 12 Days by Raymond Depardon, I Am Not Your Negro by Raoul Peck, The Passion of Joan of Arc by Carl Theodor Dreyer, Félicité by Alain Gomis,The Big Bad Fox and other tales by Benjamin Renner and Patrick Imbert, and The Workshop by Laurent Cantet. Each screening will include a short panel discussion session following the film.

Tournées Film Festival is supported by FACE Foundation and the Cultural Services of the French Embassy.

You were 1,500 to attend A Night of Philosophy and Ideas on January 26th at the Moody Center for the Arts, Thank You! The event, co-presented by the Cultural Service of the French Embassy in Houston and the Moody Center for the Arts at Rice University, brought to Houston French and American artists and philosophers for a night marathon of philosophical debates, on issues pertaining to ecology and the environment. Thank you to the presenters, artists, participants and sponsors who made this first Night of Philosophy and Ideas in Houston possible.

VISUAL ART

DALLAS, TX | FROM FEBRUARY 24 TO MAY 26

Co-organized by the Musée national des beaux-arts du Québec, the Barnes Foundation (Philadelphia), the Dallas Museum of Art, and the Musée d’Orsay, Paris, this international exhibition is dedicated to one of the founding members of the French Impressionist movement, Berthe Morisot (1841–95). Berthe Morisot, Woman Impressionist focuses on the artist’s treatment of the modern figure through approximately 70 paintings from public and private collections around the world. The exhibition will be on view at the Dallas Museum of Art from February 24 to May 26. Don't miss the Opening Day Tour on February 24 at 3PM.

European Art returns to the refurbished fourth floor of the San Antonio Museum of Art’s East Tower. The new installation features a combination of favorite and less-familiar works from the permanent collection, such as paintings by Gustave Courbet. One of the Museum’s best-known and frequently loaned European paintings, The Woodcutters by Pierre Puvis de Chavanne, is returning on view. In addition to the Museum’s own works, the presentation features nearly a dozen loans from distinguished international and Texas private collections. Among them is a 17th-century painting by Hyacinthe Rigaud, Daniel François Voysin, a grandiose example of the official state portrait in France during the late 17th and 18th centuries.

After the tremendous success of her first translated novel The Perfect Nanny (2018), the award-winning Franco-Moroccan author Leïla Slimani comes back to the U.S. to discuss her new fascinating novel Adèle, originally published by Gallimard in 2016 with the title Dans le jardin de l'ogre. She will be at Book People in Austin, TX on February 25.

VOTE BETWEEN MAY 1 AND MAY 15

The Prix Albertine Jeunesse, a reader's choice award, invites children between 3 and 11 years of age to choose their favorite book from a selection of works of Francophone youth literature that are available in English translation. The prize seeks to reinforce the practice and love of reading among children. The theme for this year's selection is "heroes and heroines", and offers different books for each age category: 3-6 years, 7-9 years, and 10-11 years.

HOUSTON, TX | FEBRUARY 22-MARCH 2

Rice University Theatre Program will present “Picasso at the Lapin Agile” by Steve Martin. This long running Off Broadway absurdist comedy places Albert Einstein and Pablo Picasso in a Parisian cafe in 1904, just before the renowned scientist transformed physics with his theory of relativity and the celebrated painter set the art world afire with Cubism.

DALLAS, TX | FEBRUARY 8 & 9

French pianist and composer Emile Naoumoff will be at the Saint Matthew's Cathedral in Dallas, TX to perform a free recital on February 8, and to present a free Master Class on February 9 with select young pianists and a chamber music ensemble from Southern Methodist University’s Meadows School of the Arts. His performance will feature music of Jean-Sébastien Bach, Maurice Ravel, Fauré, Lili Boulanger, and Nadia Boulanger.

French Psychedelic Surf Indie Rock and Lo-Fi band La Chinoise will be touring Texas this month, with performances in Austin, TX (Hotel Vegas on February 19 and Mohawk on February 20), San Antonio, TX (Paper Tiger on February 21), and El Paso, TX (Love Buzz on February 23). Da Camera of Houston presents Tous les Matins du Monde; a performance by Jordi Savall and Le Concert des Nations at the Cullen Theater, inspired by the soundtrack music of the 1991 film, featuring works of Jean-Baptiste Lully, Couperin, Marin Marais, Sainte-Colombe, Rameau and Jean-Marie Leclair. The film, directed by Alain Corneau and starring Gérard Depardieu, shows the eminent musician, Marin Marais, looking back on his young life when he was a pupil of Monsieur de Sainte-Colombe.

FACE Contemporary Theater seeks to support French-American artistic collaborations and co-productions that help build productive partnerships between cultural organizations on both sides of the Atlantic. It also supports projects that explore aesthetic boundaries and reflect the cultural and artistic diversity of the French and American contemporary scenes.

The program supports the productions of contemporary playwrights, the residencies of directors and performers, as well as the presentation and touring of French productions in the United States and American productions in France. Projects must take place between June 1st, 2019, and August 31, 2020

Created by the Embassy of France in the United States and the FACE Foundation, the Thomas Jefferson Fund supports cooperation among the most promising young French and American researchers, and fosters forward-looking collaborative research that addresses the most pressing global challenges. Each selected French-American project will receive a grant of up to $20,000 over a period of two years, covering travel expenses between France and the US, accommodation costs and a part of the organizational costs of joint conferences, and of publication costs.

For its 4th edition, the festival includes in its selection the screening of French films Demain, directed by Mélanie Laurent and Cyril Dion, Makala directed by Emmanuel Gras, and Je suis Charlie directed by Emmanuel Leconte and Daniel Leconte.

In the framework of Black History Month, the 2016 documentary film I Am Not Your Negro, directed by Haitian filmmaker Raoul Peck, will be screened in Norman, OK on February 8 at West Wind UCC, in Oklahoma City on February 11 at Ralph Ellison Library, in Seguin, TX on February 13 at Texas Lutheran University and in Huntsville, TX on February 25 at Sam Houston State University.

2018 Swiss avant-garde horror essay film The Image Book, directed by Jean-Luc Godard, will be screened in Tulsa, OK on February 8-14 at Circle Cinema, in Oklahoma City, OK on March 1-3 at the Oklahoma City Museum of Art, and in Houston, TX on February 28, March 2 and 9, at the Museum of Fine Arts, Houston.

Screening of 1975 French horror film La Bête at Austin Film Society. In this erotic fairy-tale from Immoral Tales director Walerian Borowcyck, a young woman, promised in marriage to a nobleman, is consumed by visions about a legendary—and legendarily insatiable—beast of prey on the family’s estate.
