He was born in Spain but lived most of his adult life in France where he changed the shape of modern art. We all think we know Picasso. But a new exhibition at the Art Institute of Chicago is inviting us to think again. Representing Picasso's innovations in nearly every media--paintings, sculpture, prints, drawings, and ceramics--the works not only tell the story of Picasso's artistic development but also
Chicago's great interest in and support for the artist since the Armory Show of 1913, a signal event in the history of modern art. For an artist who rarely travelled - he never came to Chicago or even the United-States – he once famously said that he could go anywhere he wanted to in his head – this relationship is closer than many of us might expect.
