Picasso and Chicago

He was born in Spain but lived most of his adult life in France where he changed the shape of modern art.

We all think we know Picasso.  But a new exhibition at the Art Institute of Chicago is inviting us to think again. Representing Picasso's innovations in nearly every media--paintings, sculpture, prints, drawings, and ceramics--the works not only tell the story of Picasso's artistic development but also Chicago's great interest in and support for the artist since the Armory Show of 1913, a signal event in the history of modern art.

For an artist who rarely travelled - he never came to Chicago or even the United-States – he once famously said that he could go anywhere he wanted to in his head – this relationship is closer than many of us might expect.
