Citywide - Chicago
Under the direction of Chicago-based master puppeteer Blair Thomas,
the 12-day, city-wide Chicago International Puppet Theater celebrates the full breadth of the art of contemporary puppetry for young and adult audiences with an international pageant of top puppets and puppet artists from Chicago, the U.S. and around the world in partnership with Chicago top cultural institutions. It showcases an entertaining and eclectic array of puppet styles from around the world including marionettes, shadow puppets, Bunraku puppets, tiny toy puppets, and distinctive, innovative styles of contemporary puppetry. The Festival features public performance across the city, a symposium hosted at the University of Chicago, and classes and workshops leading up to and during the Festival. The
performances will astonish and delight you; the puppets will tickle your curiosity; their stories will warm your heart and will stretch the boundaries of your imagination. And for those of you who have yet to see contemporary puppet theater, we can guarantee it will be like nothing you have ever seen before. FOR MORE INFORMATION |

A composer, sound artist, and musician based in Grenoble, France, Laurent Bigot develops his ideas through his own explorations or through collaboration with musicians, dancers, filmmakers, writers, actors, and visual artists. As a saxophonist he plays with Musicabrass, an open-air orchestra that engages with the environment. As an electroacoustician and a tinkerer, he composes in the studio and plays on stage, using various analog devices, with a fondness for live sound creation.

December 6, 2014 - January 25, 2015
The Art Institute of Chicago
FREE
This interactive installation celebrates the art of puppetry by allowing visitors of all ages to explore the movements of shadow, hand, and finger puppets. Using imaginary figures or creatures and characters inspired by artworks in the Art Institute’s collection—including James Ensor’s The Temptation of St. Anthony, the centerpiece of the Ensor special exhibition—novice puppeteers can experiment with ways to create puppets, develop stories, and use sound effects and props in order to create playful, one-of-a-kind performances.

This international symposium brings together artists from Manual Cinema, Blind Summit, Stan’s Cafe and others with invited scholars from diverse fields to investigate the meaning, vitality and relevance of contemporary puppetry. At once cutting to the heart of puppetry and seeking its broadest significance, participants will address questions such as: How do we attach identity to a face? How do we perceive realness and fakeness? Where do we find meaning in materiality?
