APPLICATION DEADLINE: JANUARY 27

The Institut français, the Cultural Services of the French Embassy in the United States, and FACE Foundation are joining forces to launch a new program: Etant donnés Residencies. This program supports French visual artists seeking to spend 2 to 4 months in the United States, in order to develop specific research or projects in collaboration with an American organization.

DALLAS, TX | DECEMBER 4 - MARCH 19, 2017

Spanning the 12th to early 16th centuries, Art and Nature in the Middle Ages at Dallas Museum of Art emphasizes nature’s constant presence in the immediate environment and spiritual life of men and women in the Middle Ages. The exhibition, organized by the Musée de Cluny, musée national du Moyen Âge, Paris, presents more than 100 objects that reflect the wide range of styles, techniques, and iconography that flourished during this period.

AUSTIN, TX | ON VIEW UNTIL DECEMBER 10

Nuclear power plants, paper mills, coal mines – for twenty years, French artist Tania Mouraud’s video and sound installations have shown the immensity of environmental industrial sites around the world to audiences removed from a direct experience of such sites’ power and effect. The Visual Arts Center of the University of Texas at Austin, with the support of the Cultural Service of the French Embassy in Houston, presents the exhibition Everyday Ogres in Austin curated by Allison Myers, a new work that expands Mouraud's efforts to the Gulf Coast.

Da Camera's jazz series features French-American singer Cécile McLorin Salvant, winner of the Grammy Award for Best Jazz Vocal Album. She impresses with her unique interpretations of unknown and rarely-recorded jazz and blues compositions and with her own original songs.

Light & sound collide at Day For Night, Free Press Houston's wintertime two-day festival aimed to mingle music and "experiential" art. Get ready for the light and sound installation conceived by Nonotak studio, a collaboration between the illustrator Noemi Schipfer and the architect musician Takami Nakamoto.

Enchanted Promenade captivates downtown Houston visitors at Discovery Green with its ten colorful, giant peony bouquets by TILT, a French light and art design studio from Lyon. TILT's work focuses on the exploration of light and its interplay with art, architecture and space. They aim to provide unexpected and enchanting experiences by altering scale and engaging the environment in unique and unusual ways. Enchanted Promenade marks their first presentation in the United States.

PROGRAM OPENS IN JANUARY 2017

The 3rd edition of the Young French Cinema program offers American theaters, universities, film societies, art house cinemas, the Alliance Française network and other organizations the opportunity to screen contemporary French films and hold discussions with French filmmakers. The program is co-produced annually by the Cultural Services of the French Embassy and UniFrance, in partnership with Telefilm, ACID and CineConductor.

OKLAHOMA CITY, OK | DECEMBER 2-4

As the seasons pass in a rugged village in the mountains of Southern France, two young men navigate the psychological landscape of their relationship which vacillates between disdain and attraction. The Oklahoma City Museum of Art presents Being 17 by acclaimed French filmmaker André Téchiné giving us an ultra-naturalistic slice of rocky adolescent life that combines violence and sensuality, wrenching loss and tender discovery.

OKLAHOMA CITY, OK | DECEMBER 2-8

The Oklahoma City Museum of Art is screening Seasons, filmed over the course of four years and filled with remarkably intimate, visually striking footage of large and small creatures in their natural habitats. Aided by careful editing and a sparse, poetic French-language voice-over, filmmakers Jacques Perrin and Jacques Cluzaud skillfully document the complex relationships between man, animal, and nature.

FORT WORTH, TX | DECEMBER 4

In 1886, French art dealer Paul Durand-Ruel exhibited almost 300 Impressionist paintings in New York, introducing enlightened Americans to modern French painting. In doing so, he not only filled great American collections with Impressionist masterworks, but kept Impressionism alive at a time when it faced complete failure. This energetic film screening at the Kimbell Art Museum tells his remarkable story along with that of the Impressionists themselves.

DALLAS, TX | DECEMBER 11

The Ultra-Seeing film series is presented by the School of Arts, Technology and Emerging Communication (ATEC) at the University of Texas at Dallas and their French partner Light Cone at the Nasher Sculpture Center with the support of the Cultural Service of the French Embassy in Houston. Five films on musical paradigm including Rythmes 76 by Jean-Michel Bouhours and R by Yann Beauvais are screened in confrontation with films by local artists.

Chateaubriand Fellowship, a grant offered by the Embassy of France in the United States, supports outstanding Ph.D. students from American universities who wish to conduct research in France for a period ranging from 4 to 9 months. Chateaubriand fellows are selected through a merit-based competition, through a collaborative process involving expert evaluators in both countries, in STEM and HSS.
