FACE Foundation, in partnership with the Cultural Services of the French Embassy in the United States, will support in 2021 a total of five projects presented by cultural institutions in Texas through its Etant donnés Contemporary Art program.

Screening and Installation of Video Works by Michele Magema, a one-night screening of short video works with the Congolese-French artist, presented by Aurora Picture Show in Houston;

Research on Michele Magema, conducted by Aurora Picture Show curator Mary Magsamen, who will receive a Curatorial Fellowship as she researches and develops a project with French-Congolese artist Michèle Magema;

Caroline Mesquita: l'amour à la machine, a newly commissioned, site-specific installation by young French sculptor and video artist Caroline Mesquita at the Blaffer Art Museum in Houston;

Frac Bretagne - Art Norac Award, which will benefit from a Curatorial Fellowship supporting the University of Texas at Austin's Visual Art Center Director MacKenzie Stevens in a research trip to France;

and The Politics of Freedom: Claude Cahun and Bouchra Khalili, a research project conducted by Contemporary Art Museum Houston curator Dean Daderko.

BASTILLE DAY

TEXAS & OKLAHOMA | JULY 11 & 14

These coming days, join the various in-person events happening in Texas and Oklahoma to celebrate the French national day:

- On July 11 in Edmond, OK with the Alliance française of Oklahoma City (food, French music and games);

- On July 14 in Dallas, TX with the Alliance française of Dallas (at Lavendou Bistro Provençal), and in San Antonio, TX with the Alliance française of San Antonio (special menus at local restaurants and cultural activities from home).
 

VIRTUAL EVENTS | JULY 14

Would you rather celebrate Bastille Day from home? In addition to the online celebrations presented by the French Embassy in the US, check out the list of virtual Bastille Day events happening on July 14, presented by cultural institutions in Texas:
- With Ars Lyrica and MFAH Rienzi in Houston at 6pm - Vive la France! Broadcast Concert: virtual concert, activities and educational segments;
- With MFAH Rienzi in Houston - Bastille Day programming (check this page in a few days for more information): French history quiz, family art activity, performance via video and a selection of French artworks from the Rienzi collection online;
- With the Alliance Française of San Antonio, all day - Cultural activities from home: French trivia, French story time, panel discussion.

 

FOCUS ON

Following the devastating fire of Notre-Dame de Paris cathedral in April of 2019, Houstonian Philanthropist Becca Cason Thrash led a fundraiser held late February-early March in Mexico City, inviting charitable patrons and socials from around the world. Get a glimpse of the three-day event in this article published last June by PaperCity Magazine.

Highly dedicated to supporting French cultural institutions, Becca Cason Thrash is also the current Vice Chairman for the American Friends of the Louvre, a member of the Biennale Commission of Paris and received from the French government in 2010 the Legion of Honor.

SAN ANTONIO, TX | MCNAY ART MUSEUM | UNTIL AUGUST 16

Henri Matisse's Jazz is one of the masterpieces of 20th-century art. The hypnotic artist’s book is made of 20 plates created from cut and pasted colored papers and illustrates the circus, mythology, and travel. The jazz element can be found in the improvisational techniques seen throughout the book.

Matisse’s Jazz will be on view through August 16.

HOUSTON, TX & SAN ANTONIO, TX

On view through August 16 at the Museum of Fine Arts, Houston, TX: Francis Bacon: Late Paintings, an exhibition from the Centre Pompidou in Paris, featuring some 40 canvases from the British artist | On view through September 13 at the McNay Art Museum of San Antonio, TX: Fashion Nirvana: Runway to Everyday, featuring over 60 garments by famous international designers such as Dior and Jean Paul Gaultier.

MUSIC

OPERA IN THE HIGHTS & MUSIQA | VIDEO

Opera in the Heights and Musiqa present a virtual encore of The Leader which premiered last February for two weekends at Opera in the Heights. A new opera by Karim Al-Zand, with words by French-Romanian playwright Eugene Ionesco.

Approximately 35 minutes in length, the video performance is followed by an artist talkback held on Youtube Live late June.

LA FOLLIA AUSTIN BAROQUE | VIDEO

Watch an online performance of La Follia Austin Baroque's concert "French Baroque? Oui! Oui!", featuring music by Couperin, Rameau, Jacquet de la Guerre, Campra, Clerambault, Charpentier, Robert de Visée, and Boësset.

The live performances, which were part of the 2020 French Cultures Festival, were cancelled when the coronavirus was detected in Austin on March 13. This video performance was recorded on March 14, before social distancing guidelines were issued.

HIGHER EDUCATION

Good news to all students planning on studying in France. France will progressively start to open its Schengen Area external borders from 1 July. This will occur gradually and in a differentiated manner depending on the health situations in third countries, and in line with the European procedures to be issued by that time.

Given the importance of the attractiveness of French higher education, international students will be allowed to travel to France, regardless of their countries of origin, and visa procedures will be facilitated. Visa and resident permit applications will be processed as a priority.

APPLICATION DEADLINE: OCTOBER 30

The Transitioning to Virtual Exchange Covid-19 Relief Fund launched by the FACE Foundation in collaboration with the French Embassy aims at supporting French-American collaborations and preparing for the post-pandemic when international travel resumes.

Share your Franco-American project that will allow students to connect online to ideas, peers and methods from the partner country in order to obtain funding of up to $7,500 (see application details). Projects will be selected on a rolling basis until October 30.

OKLAHOMA CITY | OKLAHOMA CITY MUSEUM OF ART | JULY 24-26 & 30

Screening of 2019 French-Japanese drama film The Truth (in French: La Vérité), written and directed by Hirokazu Kore-eda, starring French actors Catherine Deneuve, Juliette Binoche and Ludivine Sagnier.

The film will be screened in the Noble Theater of the Oklahoma City Museum of Art, which reopened late June.
