FAYETTEVILLE, AR | FEBRUARY 2-3

Arkansas Debut, 7pm at the Walton Arts Center.

Since 2010, choreographer Hervé Koubi has traveled alongside a troupe of Algerian and Burkina Faso dancers presenting his newest work, What the Day Owes to the Night. Set to traditional Sufi music, the piece combines martial arts, capoeira and hip-hop with the Algerian heritage and French training of the choreographer to tell the story of his own path to self-discovery.

HOUSTON, TX | FEBRUARY 3 - JULY 9

Curated by Paul R. Davis, ReCollecting Dogon at the Menil Collection, supported in part by the Cultural Service of the French Embassy in Houston, showcases over 25 examples of artistry from the Bandiagara region in Mali during the mid-20th century. The works suggest the significance of art to daily life among Dogon peoples and evoke formidable legacies of colonialism and the limitations of representing them. Recently commissioned masks, videos by Sérou Dolo of recent masking events, and contemporary works by artists Amahigueré Dolo and Alaye Kene Atô present vibrant, living visual culture and serve as counterpoints to historical representations of Dogon peoples.

The Nasher Sculpture Center is offering students ages (14–22) the opportunity to submit content created in response to the work of 2017 Nasher Prize Laureate, French artist Pierre Huyghe, for publication in a limited-run student ‘zine. Submission requirements can be found here.

HOUSTON, TX | FEBRUARY 16

Malian artist Amahigueré Dolo is internationally recognized for creating expressive wood forms and drawings on the crumpled surfaces of repurposed cement paper. Part of the exhibition ReCollecting Dogon at the Menil Collection, his installation Components of the World (Adouron Bew), 2007, is the first presentation of his work in an American museum. Dolo discusses his installation and other work with Curator of Collections Paul R. Davis and art historian Jessica Hurd. Conversation in French and English.

Jonathan Hopson presents the first solo exhibition of French artist Annabelle Arlie in the US. Arlie's Chlorophylle is an RGB echo of wilderness. She lives and works in Guéthary, France and has exhibited in Paris, Bordeaux, Toulouse, Copenhagen, Los Angeles, and at Bahamas Biennial in Mukwonago, Wisconsin.

DALLAS, TX | UNTIL MARCH 25

The Galerie frank elbaz presents Meandering, Abstractly, an exhibition including a selection of works by Bernard Piffaretti and Shiela Hicks, both living and working in Paris, as well as a painting by the French artist Martin Barré that has not been shown publicly since it’s first exhibition in 1979 in Paris. Also included are historical works by Julije Knifer and Mangelos. The work of both artists is in the collection of Centre Georges Pompidou and has been included in recent survey exhibitions at the museum as well as Musée d’Art Contemporain, Nîmes.

FORT WORTH, TX | FEBRUARY 28 - APRIL 11

Texas Christian University's Department of Modern Language Studies is one of the recipients of the Tournées Festival grant, a program of the FACE Foundation in partnership with the Cultural Services of the French Embassy. This program brings French cinema to American college and university campuses. All screenings are free and open to the public.
French movies screening at TCU include Qu'Allah bénisse la France!, La Cour de Babel, Phantom Boy and Du Rififi chez les Hommes.

DALLAS, TX | FEBRUARY 12

The Ultra-Seeing film series is presented by the School of Arts, Technology and Emerging Communication (ATEC) at the University of Texas at Dallas and their French partner, Light Cone, at the Nasher Sculpture Center with the support of the Cultural Service of the French Embassy in Houston. This month's screenings are on the theme Entendre ce que l'on voit (Hearing What We See).

MyFrenchFilmFestival is the first entirely dematerialised French film festival. Geared towards Internet users worldwide and available for one month, it features a selection of 10 shorts and 10 feature films in competition that you can watch directly from home.

FRANCE ON CAMPUS AWARD
HUNTSVILLE, TX | FEBRUARY 17

The France on Campus Award, launched by the Cultural Services of the French Embassy, is intended to help student organizations eager to create or continue a major France-related project on campus by providing a unique package of funding, mentorship and networking. As one of the winners, Sam Houston State University Le Club de français (The French Club) hosts an event for Black History Month on February 17 at the Vortexan. A Night in Paris: A Tribute to Black Artists Exiled in Paris celebrates the work of artists such as Josephine Baker, Ertha Kitt, Sidney Bechet, Nina Simone, Richard Wright, James Baldwin, and Henry Oshawa Tanner, a night of art, music and poetry.
