University of Chicago - International House Assembly Hall

Free event but rsvp is required

Please join us for a lecture and conversation with Christiane Taubira, former Justice Minister of France . Christiane Taubira was elected for times to the National Assembly of France (representing French Guiana), where she was the driving force behind the 2001 law that recognizes the Atlantic slave trade and slavery as a crime against humanity. In 2012, she was appointed Justice Minister of France. In that capacity, she oversaw fundamental penal reforms that prevent recidivism and promote rehabilitation, and introduced a law that both legalized same-sex marriage in France, and allows same-sex couples to adopt children. Her political engagement embodies an outstanding commitment and dedication to human rights, dignity and equal rights for all of us.

This talk will also be broadcast live in 11 cities as part of the Marianne Midwest Series, which provides a forum for distinguished cultural and political icons from France to engage audiences at the University of Chicago, and to interact (via live teleconference broadcast) with audience members network in the Midwest. It consists of a series of web debates on contemporary topics, meant to bring together American and French points of view to Midwest audiences.
