JANUARY 2015

TRANSLATION 2015

The Book Department is now accepting applications for its 2015 Translation Grants session. Please note that works scheduled to be printed before September 2015 will not be considered for the first session as support needs to be acknowledged on the copyright page of the book and as a preface and a logo are required for the French Voices Award.

On Wednesday, January 21, our second French Voices Award Ceremony will take place. We are proud to welcome Honorary Chair Rick Moody who will announce the winner.

The three finalists are Barbara Cassin’s La Nostalgie, Dominique Fabre’s Guys Like Me, and Fiston Mwanza Mujila’s Tram 83. You can review the list of our ten 2014 French Voices grantees here and the results for the Hemingway Grants Fall session of 2014 here.

To learn about the titles currently seeking an American publisher, or for information about past grantees still seeking a publisher, please contact us at: 972livre@gmail.com.

We look forward to receiving your applications!

2015 TRANSLATION PROGRAMS

We are pleased to announce that the Cultural Services of the French Embassy, the Institut français and FACE Foundation are now accepting applications for their translation assistance programs. The Book Department of the Cultural Services of the French Embassy works with FACE Foundation (the French American Cultural Exchange), the Institut français and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, to promote French and Francophone literature and to encourage English translations of French fiction and non-fiction, children’s books, comics and digital books. To that effect, it provides and oversees three bi-annual programs concerning translations from French into English of works that have not yet been published in the United States.

The Cultural Services of the French Embassy offer a single online application process. By filling out the form and uploading the necessary documents, you may apply directly online to the following three programs:

FRENCH VOICES AWARDS

The French Voices Awards honor both translators and American publishers for English translations of works that have been published in France in the last 6 years. Award recipients are selected by an independant literary committee. Each book receives a $6,000 award, shared by the American publisher ($4000) and the translator ($2000) ($5,000 and $1,000 respectively in case of a comic book or picture book).
Furthermore, the French Voices Committee chooses now a Grand Prize Winner for each year. The winner will receive $10,000 in total ($6,000 to cover the preface and the publishing costs and a $4,000 non-negotiable bonus to be allocated to the translator; and respectively $7,000 and $3,000 in case of a comic book or picture book). The French author of the translated book will also be awarded the opportunity to do a book tour in the US when his or her book will be published in the US.

HEMINGWAY GRANTS

Hemingway Grants allow publishers to receive financial help for the translation and publication of a French work into English. Grant beneficiaries are selected by the Book Department of the French Embassy in the United States. Grants awarded for each work range from $500 to $6,000.

ACQUISITION OF RIGHTS GRANTS

The Institut français helps American publishers offset the cost of acquiring the rights to French works. Grant beneficiaries are selected by the Institut français in Paris. The amount awarded cannot exceed the amount of the advance paid to the French publisher for the acquisition of rights and varies from 500 to 7,000 Euros.
