BILINGUAL EDUCATION

On November 2nd, the Cultural Service in Houston invited Dr. Myriam Met, bilingual education expert, to Mark White Elementary school to provide expertise on the new French dual language immersion program that opened last August in PreK and Kindergarten.

Ribbon Cutting Ceremony: Mark White Elementary School, home to the only public French dual language program in Texas, is holding its official campus opening December 13th.

NPR Ed

In an article on November 29th, NPR Ed discusses the latest neuroscience findings regarding bilingual education. "In the last 20 years or so, there's been a virtual explosion of research on bilingualism," says Judith Kroll, a professor at the University of California, Riverside.

AUTHOR ON TOUR
JANUARY 2017

French children's author Marion Bataille will be leading workshops at Eisenhower International School, Tulsa, OK, and Mark White Elementary School, Houston, TX.

The 1.30h workshop program comprises of:
- a presentation and reading of her books on onomatopoeias (“Bruits”) published by Thierry Magnier.
- an activity on how to create typography cut-outs and collages

GRANTS AND PROGRAMS
DEADLINE: JANUARY 15th 2017

The Teaching Assistant Program in France offers students the opportunity to work in France for 7 months, teaching English to French students of all ages.

DEADLINE: JANUARY 27th 2017

The Chateaubriand Fellowship is a grant offered by the Embassy of France in the United States. It supports outstanding Ph.D. students from American universities who wish to conduct research in France for a period ranging from 4 to 9 months. Chateaubriand fellows are selected through a merit-based competition, through a collaborative process involving expert evaluators in both countries, in STEM and HSS.

DEADLINE: JANUARY 15th 2017

Candidates must be U.S. citizens, be affiliated with an American college or university, become members of the SPFFA at the time of their application and have a sufficient command of spoken and written French to pursue their proposed studies and/or research in France or in Québec. Applications in all disciplines are considered, but applicants in literature, art, music, history, social sciences and communications have priority.

Each year the Jean et Marie-Louise Dufrenoy scholarships enable two American students in the sciences (mathematics, physics, chemistry, biology, medecine, geology, botany) or in technology (engineering, computer science, etc.) to pursue further studies in France during a full academic year within the student’s own field.

This call is open to all research disciplines and offers post-doctoral fellowships for international experienced researchers in region Centre-Val de Loire laboratories including: A 12-months fellowship in a high level laboratory; Integration in an international scientific community; Funding and organisation of international scientific events; Enabling environment (housing, administrative support, etc...).

FRENCH FOR NATIVE SPEAKERS
JANUARY 7th

Education Française Greater Houston opens its class La Maternelle, a program designed for 4 year old French Native Speakers. First come, first served, 17 classes from January 7th to May 20th.

CINEMA
PROGRAM OPENS IN JANUARY 2017

The 3rd edition of the Young French Cinema program offers American theaters, universities, film societies, art house cinemas, the Alliance Française network and other organizations the opportunity to screen contemporary French films and hold discussions with French filmmakers. The program is co-produced annually by the Cultural Services of the French Embassy and UniFrance, in partnership with Telefilm, ACID and CineConductor.
