Professional Development for French Teachers and Professors

Do you want to bring something new to your classroom this fall? The SPCD (Stages Pédagogiques de Courte Durée) program offers funding for a total of 35 American teachers to attend a short summer training in France : 29 positions are offered for teachers of French as a foreign language at CAVILAM French Alliance in the town of Vichy ; and 6 positions for teachers of Dual Language & Immersion programs at CLA (Centre de Langues Appliquées) in the town of Besançon.

The BELC training, organized by the CIEP (Centre International d’Etudes Pédagogiques), are intensive courses offered to teacher trainers every year on the campus of the Université de Nantes. BELC (Bureau pour l'Enseignement de la Langue et de la Civilisation Françaises) trainings are intensive professional courses focused on four main objectives: improving instruction, improving training, improving evaluation, and improving classroom management. The Cultural Embassy of France in the United States will sponsor 2 participants to attend these intensive trainings this summer.

The 1st North American Spring University will be held at IFAL (Institut Français d'Amérique Latine) in Mexico City. The theme is "The digital environment at the service of innovative pedagogy". A unique space for meetings and training between French professors with the presence of several international experts from CIEP, CCIP, CLA Besançon, CAVILAM, the United States and Canada.

Over the last 5 years, the Embassy of France in the United States has been supporting the development of French for Professional Purposes, notably through facilitating annual training courses for university professors in French for professional purposes didactics, in partnership with the CCIP (Chambre du Commerce et de l'Industrie de Paris Ile-de-France).

In Fall 2018, during the ACTFL Convention held in New Orleans, Dr. Cheryl Toman, Chair of the Modern Languages and Literatures Department at Case Western Reserve University, gave a 45 minutes presentation on the benefits of French for Professional Purposes at our invitation. During this presentation, Dr. Toman described the benefits of learning professional French in the United States through the experience of her department, and offered guidelines on starting this type of course.
