Jacques Demy: Heart of the New Wave

Feb 8-Mar 6, 2014

The Gene Siskel Film Center, in partnership with the Institut Français and the Cultural Services of the French Embassy in New York and Chicago, proudly present an 8-film tribute to French cinema master Jacques Demy (1931-1990). Often associated with the French New Wave of the 1960's, Demy stood out among his contemporary filmmakers with his distinctive style and intuitive knowledge about the trials of the human heart.

His first film, Lola (1961), garnered considerable praise and attention, but it was his Umbrellas of Cherbourg (1964), that took his career to new heights on an international scale. Following the success of Umbrellas, and the later hit The Young Girls of Rochefort, Demy's career took an interesting turn. He began to experiment with topics and settings, while still holding true to his own distinctive style of bittersweet melancholy.

In 1962, Demy wed the equally acclaimed director Agnès Varda. She has been pivotal to the preservation of her late husband's legacy, through her film contributions about his life and work (Jacquot de Nantes, 1991) and through her supervision in the restoration of his timeless films.
