The French Cultures Festival showcases the diversity of contemporary French culture during the month of March. It provides opportunities for the public to experience the language and cultures from France and the francophone world through an eclectic program.

We hope the festival generates interest in creative expressions from France and beyond while strengthening partnerships with American institutions.

PERFORMANCES | MARCH 12 & 13

What Shall We Do Next? is a group exhibition presented by DiverseWorks featuring the work of French artist Julien Prévieux, recipient of the Prix Marcel Duchamp 2014. It examines how technology and advertising have shifted our relationships to our physical bodies, our shaping of subjectivity, and notions of the real. Julien Prévieux will also present a live performance piece with a cast of Houston and Portland-based dancers.

This project is supported by the Institut Français and the Cultural Services of the French Embassy.

CURATOR TALK | MARCH 14

The Menil Collection celebrates the work of French artist Henri Cartier-Bresson (1908–2004), founding father of contemporary street photography—a movement dedicated to capturing the flux of life in the public sphere. In an exhibition of 50 photographs, Life Is Once, Forever: Henri Cartier-Bresson Photographs, looks at the photographer’s pioneering career and humanist vision.

DALLAS, TX I MARCH 25 & 26

What The Day Owes To The Night is a dance performance by La Compagnie Hervé Koubi which combines capoeira, urban and contemporary dance, and martial arts with classical ballet. It will be presented by the Society for the Performing Arts in Houston and by the Texas International Theatrical Arts Society in Dallas.

This project is supported by the French-US Exchange in Dance (FUSED), a program of the FACE Foundation, in partnership with the Cultural Services of the French Embassy.

Tournées Film Festival is a program of the FACE Foundation, in partnership with the Cultural Services of the French Embassy, which aims to bring French cinema to American college and university campuses. The University of St. Thomas will screen Tip Top by Serge Bozon, Girlhood by Céline Sciamma, Mood Indigo by Michel Gondry, The King and the Mockingbird by Paul Grimault, Diplomacy by Volker Schlöndorff & 3 hearts by Benoît Jacquot.

This roundtable, organized by the French/TAMU Institute at the University of Texas A&M, will explore the work of novelist Irène Nemirovsky, author of Suite Française, with Susan Suleiman, C. Douglas Dillon Professor of the Civilization of France and Professor of Comparative Literature at Harvard University; Olivier Philiponnat, French author and Nathan Bracher, professor of French at Texas A&M University.

FRANCE ROCKS SHOWCASES | MARCH 15 & 17

This year again, the Cultural Services of the French Embassy are present at SxSW, the annual world-renowned celebration of music, film and digital culture. France will be well represented in the official program of the three festivals, the French Tech Pavilion in the Trade Show (Business France) with 14 French startups. The French Tech Day on March 15 will feature startup pitch sessions, keynote speakers (Vivendi, Devialet, BandsInTown), lunch and live music.

Bureau Export / France Rocks organizes 3 showcases with a variety of new French talents including Fakear, Cocorosie, L.E.J, Marina Kaye, Alice On The Roof, Elida Almeida, Joon Moon, Klingande, Scarecrow, Talisco, LYS, The Blind Suns - Chunk, No Captain Chunk !, Daniel Antopolsky, Hooka Hey & Indolore.
