The French Cultures Festival (Mois de la Francophonie) showcases the diversity of contemporary French culture during the month of March. It provides opportunities for the public to experience the language and cultures from France and the francophone world through an eclectic program.

We hope the festival generates interest in creative expressions from France and beyond while strengthening partnerships with American institutions.

DALLAS, TX | MARCH 6, 7.30PM

French Flutist Jean Ferrandis and pianist Angela Favazza perform Franck’s Sonata, Bizet/Borne’s Carmen Fantasy and Poulenc’s Sonata. Ferrandis is an internationally renowned flautist and conductor who has performed in prestigious concert halls around the world, including the Salle Pleyel and Théâtre des Champs Elysées in Paris.

HOUSTON, TX | MARCH 30 | 8PM

Recital by French pianist Philippe Bianconi, including works from Chopin, Debussy and Schumann. He has been described as an artist whose playing is “always close to the soul of the music, filling the space with poetry and life” (Washington Post). After winning the Silver Medal in the Seventh Van Cliburn International Competition, Bianconi made an acclaimed recital debut at Carnegie Hall in 1987 and, since then, has enthralled audiences and critics throughout the world.

A chamber opera presented by the Houston Grand Opera, celebrating Houston’s iconic Rothko Chapel, which is internationally known as a home for Mark Rothko’s work, an ecumenical sanctuary, and a global rallying place for human rights.

In March, the Nasher Sculpture Center presents a series of events honoring French artist Pierre Huyghe, 2017 Nasher Prize Laureate. The Nasher Prize celebration month is supported by the Cultural Service of the French Embassy in Houston.

ReCollecting Dogon at the Menil Collection, supported in part by the Cultural Service of the French Embassy in Houston, showcases over 25 examples of artistry from the Bandiagara region in Mali acquired by Jean and Dominique de Menil during the mid-20th century. Recently commissioned masks, videos by Sérou Dolo and contemporary works by artists Amahigueré Dolo and Alaye Kene Atô serve as counterpoints to historical representations of Dogon peoples.

Dis-moi dix mots is a project initiated by the French Ministry of Education for classes to create a collective of literary and artistic pieces of work corresponding to a selection of 10 French words. This year's words are: AVATAR, CANULAR, ÉMOTICÔNE, FAVORI, FURETEUR, HÉBERGER, NOMADE, NUAGE, PIRATE, TÉLÉSNOBER.

Spoken by more than 274 million people on the five continents and by 2.1 million people in the United States, French language is the second most widely learnt language in the world. Since 1970, French language has been celebrated on March 20, which marks the birth of the Intergovernmental Organization of French-speaking nations (Organisation internationale de la francophonie).

Col. and Professor at United States Air Force Academy and Nicolas Werth, Research Director, National Center for Scientific Research (CNRS, France) and Senior Fellow at the Institute of Contemporary History (IHTP), Paris.
