New French Cinema Weekend in Austin, TX

For the second year, the Austin Film Society (AFS) is partnering with Premiers Plans Festival of Angers, France, to create a cross-cultural dialogue about independent film. AFS and Premiers Plans will co-present three new award-winning French language first films by emerging European filmmakers, as well as a shorts program and roundtable discussion Moviemaker Dialogue to connect Austin filmmakers with their European counterparts. This program is supported in part by the Cultural Services of the French Embassy.

JUNE 3 | 8PM

The sibling dynamics of an enormous first generation Algerian-French family are tested when their 75-year-old mother goes on an unexpected journey. Drama and humor are used in this first feature film from writer-actress Fejria Deliba to challenge traditional narratives about French-Arab culture. Director in person!

JUNE 4 | 2PM

Visiting European filmmakers from New French Cinema Weekend, Fejria Deliba (Two Birds, One Stone), Jean Denizot (The Good Life), and Guillaume Senez (Keeper) will participate in a roundtable discussion about building a career on the other side of the pond. The discussion will include tips about European festivals and programs that welcome American filmmakers.

A 15-year old Francophone Swiss teen couple discover their accidental pregnancy, and are moved to keep their unborn baby. Jury award-winner at Locarno and Premiers Plans, this beautifully scripted and performed honest drama by Guillaume Senez raises essential questions about the autonomy of young people - Director in person!

La Fémis has been France's premiere public film school since 1944, training the biggest names in French cinema (Alain Resnais, Claire Denis and Louis Malle among them). In this shorts program, the student films of some of France's greatest filmmakers will be presented alongside new favorites hand-picked by the school's directors.

JUNE 5 | 4:30PM

Two brothers are raised in the beauty of the remote French countryside by their poor, ascetic father. When the police comes knocking at their door, the brothers are faced with critical choices about making their own way in the world. The Good Life's beautiful composition, and its focus on the details of life in rural France, make this feature film by Jean Denizot a special adventure indeed. Winner of Venice Days, 2013.

JUNE 5 | 7PM

Clotilde and Aude are best friends, attached at the hip, in their last year of high school in a small French village. When Paris beckons after graduation, the two decide to conquer the city together, but soon discover that they are unequally prepared for the next big step. Next Year, directed by Vania Leturcq, is a pop-infused exploration of today's Paris as seen through the eyes of two young adventurers experiencing the universal lessons of growing up. Director in attendance.
