Now playing in your local movie theaters' virtual screening rooms: New French Shorts 2020, presented by Kino Lorber, in partnership with the Cultural Services of the French Embassy and UniFrance.

Seven recent French short films to be watched from home, through the virtual screening rooms of more than 60 independent theaters nationwide.

Your purchase ($12) supports your local movie theater and provides access to the films for five days.

For the time of the temporary closings of cultural institutions in France between mid-March and May, many of them have participated in the national stay at home initiative by offering to their public and audiences the possibility to visit their collections, or experience their performances online.

Let’s take this opportunity to take a virtual trip to Agen, Amiens, Angers, Clermont-Ferrand, Cognac, Dijon, Nice and Nîmes, which have been sharing very special ties with their Texas and Oklahoma sister cities Corpus Christi, Tulsa, Austin, Norman, Denison, Dallas, Houston and Fort Worth throughout the years.

VISUAL ART

HOUSTON, TX | MUSEUM OF FINE ARTS, HOUSTON | UNTIL AUGUST 16

The Museum of Fine Arts, Houston has reopened to the public on May 23 after a two-month interruption. Currently on view: Francis Bacon: Late Paintings, an exhibition from the Centre Pompidou in Paris, featuring some 40 canvases from the British artist.

SAN ANTONIO, TX | MCNAY ART MUSEUM | JUNE 26-SEPTEMBER 13

From gowns to grunge, Fashion Nirvana: Runway to Everyday, reopening to the general public on June 26, marks the first large-scale fashion and video art exhibition in McNay history. The innovative installation celebrates the fearless designers, photographers, and video artists who made the 1990s iconic. The exhibit features over 60 garments by famous international designers such as Dior and Jean Paul Gaultier.

MOODY CENTER FOR THE ARTS (HOUSTON, TX) | VIDEOS

May 16 marked the conclusion of the Moody's spring exhibition, Radical Revisionists: Contemporary African Artists Confronting Past and Present.

Discover or relive the exhibition through this video focusing on the Moody's spring program, take a behind-the-scene tour with Executive Director Alison Weaver, and hear from featured artist Pascale Marthine Tayou as he talks about the inspiration behind his three works “Le Code Noir”, “Jpegafrica/Africagift”, and “Plastic Tree”.

The exhibition was part of the 2020 French Cultures Festival.

FOTOFEST (HOUSTON, TX) | VIDEO

Sammy Baloji's work Essay on Urban Planning from 1910 to present day city of Lubumbashi, was part of the African Cosmologies: Photography, Time, and the Other exhibition, curated by Mark Sealy and presented in conjunction with the FotoFest Biennial 2020.

DALLAS MUSEUM OF ART (DALLAS, TX) | VIRTUAL TOUR & PODCAST

Last August the DMA unveiled the newly refreshed European Art Galleries, a major undertaking that involved the total reinstallation of nearly 150 paintings, sculptures, works on paper, and decorative art objects. Explore the galleries through a virtual tour and hear curators Nicole R. Myers and Julien Domercq talk about their significant reinstallation, from displaying recent art acquisitions, to bringing objects out of storage, and more.

In addition, see how conservation improved the “aesthetic legibility” of French sculptor Albert-Ernest Carrier-Belleuse’s sculpture L’Alsace after it had spent over 10 years in storage.

KIMBELL ART MUSEUM (FORT WORTH, TX) | ONLINE COLLECTION

The Kimbell Art Museum has created more than 350 presentations of artworks from its own collection, now available on Google Arts & Culture. Close to 50 of these presentations are devoted to French art, featuring French or France-based artists such as Cézanne, de La Tour, Caillebotte, Braque, Manet, Monet, Delacroix, Pissarro, Degas, Léger, Gauguin and many more.

Literally Short Film Festival in Houston, TX is excited to announce its 7th edition held online during the dates of June 3-17, 2020. Representing 16 countries from around the world, the 2020 official selection features five French short films: Fairyocious (Féeroce) by Fabien Ara, La Hague by Mathieu Naert, Tomatic by Christophe Saber, Déjeuner Sur L'Herbe by J. Charles, J. Bourgès, N. Harbonn-Viaud and P. Rougemont, and Cell 346 by Mathilde Babo and Zoé Rossion.

In an effort to keep the Films on the Green festival’s fans and communities entertained while at home, the Cultural Services will present each week, until the end of July, curated recommendations of films to watch at home inspired by one of the festival’s past editions.

Films on the Green is a free outdoor French film festival produced annually in New York City parks since 2008, and presented by the Cultural Services of the French Embassy.

AUSTIN BAROQUE ORCHESTRA | VIDEO

Austin Baroque Orchestra presents Masterless Mistresses, a concert of French baroque music held last February at Our Lady of the Atonement Catholic Church in San Antonio, TX. The story of the Ursuline nuns of New Orleans and the world they inhabited during their first century in Louisiana since their arrival in 1727 is told using music and readings from their letters and from documents related to Louisiana's history.

The Harry Ransom Center, the University of Texas at Austin's archive, library and museum, dedicates four pages of its Spring 2020 issue to Guillaume Apollinaire, French poet and inventor of the word surrealism (pages 18-21 of the magazine / 20-23 of the online viewer).

ST EDWARD'S UNIVERSITY (AUSTIN, TX) | VIDEO

You may know of Superman, Snoopy or Naruto, but do you know Asterix, San Mao, or Monica? Watch comic books specialist Laurent Mélikian's talk, hosted by St. Edward's University, to learn more about how these massively popular characters can become ambassadors of their own people and culture.
