The Cultural Service of the French Embassy in Houston

wishes you a Happy New Year!

On January 31st, French Ambassador in the United States Gérard Araud will be present at the University of Texas at Austin to sign the Dr. Cécile DeWitt-Morette France-UT Endowed Excellence Fund, a fund to support French-American research collaborations. A $100,000 contribution from the Embassy of France (Cultural Services and Office for Science and Technology) and UT Austin that will serve as seed money to raise private donations up to $2 million.

VISUAL ART

DALLAS, TX | UNTIL JANUARY 28

The Dallas Museum of Art presents the first major exhibition in the Museum’s history dedicated to time-based media. Truth: 24 frames per second brings together 24 pioneers of film and video and over six decades of work focused on pressing contemporary themes, such as race relations, political unrest, sexual identity and the media, to explore the nature of truth and reality in contemporary life. The exhibition features works by the French duo of filmmakers Jean-Marie Straub and Danièle Huillet.

OKLAHOMA CITY, OK | JANUARY 31 | 6-8 PM

The Oklahoma City Museum of Art presents Mad Enchantment: Claude Monet and the Painting of the Water Lilies, a lecture by award-winning art historian and author Ross Kings. The talk, inspired by King's new book Mad Enchantment, tells the story behind the creation of Claude Monet's Water Lilies series. A book signing will precede and follow the lecture.

Étant donnés Contemporary Art Fund aims to strengthen ties between France and the U.S. in the field of contemporary art by fostering active collaboration and encouraging long-lasting partnerships between French visual artists, curators, and collectives and American curators and cultural institutions. The program includes: Grants to American institutions for exhibitions and artistic projects, Grants to American curators wishing to conduct and deepen their research in contemporary art in France and Grants for residencies for French or France-based visual artists seeking to spend 2 to 4 months in the United States.

PERFORMING ART

DALLAS, TX | JANUARY 20 | 8 PM

French-based Compagnie Hervé Koubi is returning to Texas this weekend for a stunning dance performance at the Winspear Opera House, presented by Titas. A work performed by 12 Algerian dancers combining capoeira, martial arts, hip hop, and contemporary dance, in the framework of their American tour.

FUSED: French U.S. Exchange in Dance fosters dialogue, strengthens professional relationships, and sparks creative artistry through cultural exchanges by introducing choreographers and performers whose works had never or rarely been seen in France or in the US. FUSED has expanded to include projects by artists from Africa, the Caribbean, and the Middle East, performing in the United States, as long as their work is co-produced by French cultural institutions. Eligible projects include productions, residencies, and the presentation and touring of French artists in the United States as well as American artists in France.

APPLICATION DEADLINE: FEBRUARY 28, 2018

FACE Contemporary Theater Fund supports French-American artistic collaborations and co-productions that explore aesthetic boundaries and reflect the cultural and artistic diversity of the French and American contemporary scenes. Eligible projects include productions of contemporary playwrights, residencies of directors and performers, presentation and touring of French productions in the United States and American productions in France. Multidisciplinary and devised theater, young audience theater productions, contemporary circus, puppetry, and street theater projects are also eligible. The program has expanded to include projects by artists from Africa, the Caribbean, and the Middle East performing in the United States, as long as their work is co-produced by French cultural institutions.

CINEMA

The Young French Cinema program has announced its 2018 selection. The program has been set up by UniFrance and the Cultural Services of the French Embassy as a way to bring French films with no US distribution to art house cinemas, film societies, the Alliance Française network and American universities. The program focuses specifically on rising talents from France. Most of the films selected in this 2018 program have premiered in the US in top international festivals.

CinéSchool, a new educational program for kids focused on French cinema and animation, provides schools, the Alliances Françaises network and cultural institutions in the U.S. with a film catalogue and trilingual educational materials specifically designed for elementary, middle school and high school students. The program is presented by the Cultural Services of the French Embassy, the Alliances Françaises network and the Institut français Paris.

WORLDWIDE | UNTIL FEBRUARY 19

The online worldwide French film screening series returns for its 8th edition, between January 19 and February 19, 2018. During one month, enjoy 30 new, unreleased French films, rate them and post your comments online! Films can be accessed via the myFrenchFilmFestival.com platform in all countries.

Screening of 2005 independent romantic drama film Regular Lovers (Les Amants réguliers) and 2017 drama film Lover for a Day (L'Amant d'un jour), directed by Philippe Garrel at Oklahoma City Museum of Arts, in the framework of the Autobiographical Cinema of Philippe Garrel film series - a series of new, newly-restored, and rarely seen masterworks by the revered French independent filmmaker.

The shortlist for the second annual Albertine Prize has been announced! The Albertine Prize recognizes American readers’ favorite work of contemporary Francophone fiction while encouraging the discovery of new literary voices, translated and published in the US in the past year. Discover the 5 shortlisted books and vote for your favorite one before May 1st.

SPRING 2018

Check out the list of French authors willing to travel and meet audiences across the U.S. The authors are available for panel discussions, readings, signings, and symposia. With limited funding available, priority will be given to institutions that submit a detailed project for an American audience, especially events with wide visibility such as book fairs and multidisciplinary festivals.

A program of FACE Foundation and Mid Atlantic Arts Foundation, in collaboration with the Cultural Services of the French Embassy, FAJE is designed to foster the creative and professional development of jazz artists from France and the United States. FAJE program proposes two grant components: grants for French and American musicians (Creative Project Grants) and grants for American presenters booking FAJE collaborations (FAJE On Tour).
