BILINGUAL EDUCATION
New French Bilingual Programs
HOUSTON

These programs are designed to support the needs of French families wishing to continue native language instruction, as well as for American and foreign families seeking a bilingual learning environment for their English-speaking children.

- Mark White Elementary is the first public school in Texas to offer a French Dual Language Immersion Program for Pre-K and Kindergarten in addition to traditional instruction in English. Two French Immersion classes will be offered at both the Pre-Kindergarten and Kindergarten level for the 2016-2017 school year.  In addition, on a yearly basis, new grade levels will be added, starting with 1st grade in 2017-2018.

- The Village School will also be opening a French immersion program for students three-year old to fourth grade students.

- Eagles on the Rock Bilingual Academy is opening a French bilingual program for Pre-K and Kindergarten that follows the curriculum guidelines of the French Ministry of Education. The school is also currently looking for teachers for the new academic year.

 
TEACHER TRAINING
Roundtable for French Teachers
HOUSTON - SEPTEMBER 24th

The Cultural Service of the French Embassy in Houston, in cooperation with the American Association of Teachers of French (AATF) will be hosting a roundtable for teachers of French in Houston. The Cultural Service, the resources available to teachers, training courses, and other educational programs. Priscilla Chastain of Cypress Lakes High school will be presenting her experience as a laureate of the SPCD (Stage Pédagogique de Courte Durée) in France over the summer. The roundtable will be a chance for teachers to exchange information, resources and methods in teaching areas such as oral expression, teaching culture in the target language, grammar, AP and IB French. The roundtable will be hosted at the Alliance Française de Houston.
Crêpes will offered to the participants. First come first served basis, only 30 places are available. Please RSVP until September 22nd at 5pm rrazavipour@gmail.com

 
FRENCH LANGUAGE
HOUSTON - SEPTEMBER 17th

EFGH (Educatin Française Greater Houston) classes will start September 17th. Assessment for newcomers will be held on September 10th. EFGH is also opening a new class for French as a second language (FLE) for 4 year olds.

ADVOCACY

But now, research suggests that mastering two languages can fundamentally alter the structure of your brain, rewiring it to work differently than the brains of those who only speak one language.

BOOKS AND TRANSLATION
TEXAS - SEPTEMBER 26th-30th

Ananda Devi is a novelist and scholar born in Trois-Boutiques, Mauritius in 1957. Ananda Devi has published eleven novels as well as short stories and poetry, and was featured at the PEN World Voices Festival in New York in 2015. Her latest novel Eve out of her ruins is published by Deep Vellum in Dallas, Texas.
She will be speaking in:
• Austin, September 26th
• Houston, September 27th
• Dallas - Fort Worth, September 28th and 29th

DEADLINE AUGUST 29th

The Book Department of the Cultural Services of the French Embassy works with FACE (French American Cultural Exchange), the Institut français and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs to promote French and Francophone literature and to encourage English translations of French fiction and non-fiction. To that effect, it provides a range of grants and awards. It oversees three bi-annual programs concerning translations from French into English of works that have not yet been published in the United States. All these grants are awarded to fiction and non fiction translations (including comic books, poetry and digital books).
