APPLICATION DEADLINE: MAY 31

The Tournées Film Festival, a program of the French American Cultural Exchange (FACE) and the Cultural Services of the French Embassy, supports French film festivals on college campuses in the U.S.
Tournées Film Festival offers the best of contemporary and classic French films (recently released in the U.S.) with a wide variety of genres.

Professors, departments, student organizations, film clubs, or other university-affiliated institutions are eligible to apply.
Information regarding program guidelines can be found on the Tournées Film Festival website and descriptions of the films selected for this year’s program (both the Featured and Classic Selections), as well as a list of films that are still available from previous years’ selections (the Alternative Selection). SAN ANTONIO, TX | THE MCNAY ART MUSEUM | UNTIL MAY 5

The end of the 19th century gave rise in Europe to heightened anxiety about the future. Van Gogh to Munch: Seduction and Anxiety, on view until May 5 at the McNay Art Museum, traces the development of art focused on the inner world of the human mind. The exhibition features artworks by French artists Charles-Marie Dulac, Paul Gauguin, as well as Portrait of Dr. Gachet by Vincent van Gogh, a penetrating portrait of the artist's last medical doctor painted in 1980 in Auvers-sur-Oise, France.

HOUSTON, TX | MOODY CENTER FOR THE ARTS | UNTIL MAY 11

Closing soon! Do not miss French artist Michel Blazy's site-specific installation We Were the Robots, on view at the Moody Center for the Arts until May 11. Featuring burnt transport pallets that depict robots and animals working on the ruins of a post-apocalyptic landscape, the installation represents a world that tries to become alive again on the consumed remains of an absurd way of life. The installation is supported by the Cultural Service of the French Embassy in Houston and is a grantee of the FACE Foundation - Étant donnés Contemporary Art program.

HOUSTON, TX | CONTEMPORARY ARTS MUSEUM HOUSTON | UNTIL JULY 28

In celebration of the 50th anniversary of the Stonewall Riot, Stonewall 50 assembles a local, national, international, and multi-generational group of artists whose work offers a snapshot of the complexion, interests, and activities of queer and allied communities. The exhibition includes painting, photography, video, sculpture, performance and media that look back at the Stonewall Riots and ahead at the queer future. It features French artist Jean-Michel Othoniel's artwork The Yellow Brick Road, 2017.

DALLAS, TX | NASHER SCULPTURE CENTER | FROM MAY 11 TO AUGUST 18

For her exhibition at the Nasher, Paris-based artist Sheila Hicks will create new, site-specific installations in the Garden and Lower Level Gallery. Building on her recent monumental outdoor interventions in Paris, Versailles, and New York City’s The High Line, Hicks will activate the linear, man-made grid of the Nasher Garden by installing durable, color-fast, pigmented fiber along the Garden’s architectural seams: walking paths, walls, and seating areas.

In the framework of Berthe Morisot, Woman Impressionist, on view at the Dallas Museum of Art until May 26, the DMA will be presenting on May 17 two talks honoring the French artist.

Late Night Talk: Berthe Morisot, Woman Impressionist presented by curator Dr. Nicole Myers at 7:30PM, followed at 9:30PM by Late Night Talk: “How much freer we are today”: Morisot’s Letters and Legacy presented by art historian Daniel Belasco.

Dior: From Paris to the World surveys more than 70 years of the House of Dior’s legacy, featuring a dynamic selection of over 100 haute couture dresses, as well as accessories, photographs, original sketches, runway videos, and other archival material. This exhibition profiles both Christian Dior himself and subsequent artistic directors, including Yves Saint Laurent, Marc Bohan, Gianfranco Ferré, John Galliano, Raf Simons, and Maria Grazia Chiuri, all of whom have carried Dior’s vision into the 21st century.

The Jazz & New Music program is designed to encourage the creative and professional development of French jazz and contemporary artists in the U.S. This program awards grants through an open, competitive application process for projects taking place in the U.S. and its respective territories, involving French composers, musicians and ensembles. The Jazz & New Music program prioritizes the projects of new generations of composers and emerging artists to reflect the cultural and artistic diversity within the Franco-American contemporary music scene.

Screening at Austin Film Society of 1985 French drama film Vagabond (Sans toit ni loi) directed by Agnès Varda on May 13 at 7:30PM and 2018 French drama film Knife+Heart (French: Un couteau dans le cœur),  directed by Yann Gonzalez on May 28 at 7:30PM.

2018 French drama film Girls of the Sun (Les filles du soleil),  directed by Eva Husson is currently playing at Landmark's Magnolia Theatre.

1997 English-language French science-fiction action film The Fifth Element (Le cinquième élément) directed and co-written by Luc Besson will be playing at The Texas Theatre on May 4th.

VOTE BETWEEN MAY 1 AND MAY 15

The Prix Albertine Jeunesse, a reader's choice award, invites children between 3 and 11 years of age to choose their favorite book from a selection of works of Francophone youth literature that are available in English translation. The prize seeks to reinforce the practice and love of reading among children. The theme for this year's selection is "heroes and heroines", and offers different books for each age category: 3-6 years, 7-9 years, and 10-11 years.

APPLICATION DEADLINE: MAY 15

The Book Department of the Cultural Services of the French Embassy in the U.S. is now accepting applications for its three biannual translation programs: the French Voices Awards, Hemingway Grants, and Acquisition of Rights. The programs aim to promote the translation into English of French and Francophone works in fiction and non-fiction, children’s books and comics. Projects can be submitted until May 15, 2019. Only works scheduled to be printed after March 2020 will be considered.
