The Cultural Service of the French Embassy in Houston is proud to announce internationally-acclaimed French singer CharlElie Couture as the 2020 French Cultures Festival kick-off concert headliner!

The free and family-friendly concert will be held on Friday, March 6 (6-10pm) downtown Houston, to launch the 2020 French Cultures Festival in Texas, Oklahoma and Arkansas, a month-long celebration of the diversity of French language and cultures. Make sure to save the date!

TEXAS, OKLAHOMA, ARKANSAS | DEADLINE: FEBRUARY 2

Each year in March, the Cultural Service of the French Embassy in Houston coordinates the French Cultures Festival in Texas, Oklahoma, and Arkansas: a month-long celebration of the French language and of the diversity of French cultures. Last year, over 40 cultural and educational events presented by more than 30 partner institutions were showcased during the festival.

Are you planning on organizing a public event promoting the French language and/or cultures between March 1 and March 31, 2020 in Texas, Oklahoma or Arkansas? Make it part of the official French cultures Festival calendar by filling out the event application form, by February 2, 2020.

Congratulations to European Horizons, student organization at Texas A&M University in College Station, TX who won the 1st prize of the France on Campus Award program with its project Le Nouveau Chapitre: The Role of France in the 21st Century Geopolitics, and to the University of Tulsa French Club with its project Franco-Osage Relations. Both student organizations have been selected by the Cultural Services of the French Embassy with eight other 2019/2020 France on Campus Awards winners.

FORT WORTH, TX | KIMBELL ART MUSEUM | UNTIL JANUARY 26

In the framework of the exhibition Renoir: The Body, The Senses on view though January 26, the Kimbell Art Museum presents a special programming around Renoir with free lectures (“The Loveliest Nudes Ever Painted”: Renoir and the Nude on Jan. 10, The Trouble with Renoir on Jan. 17) and film screenings (French Cancan on Dec 15, From Cézanne to Bonnard, the Workshop of the Midi on Jan. 5).

SAN ANTONIO, TX | MCNAY ART MUSEUM | UNTIL FEBRUARY 23

The exhibition, drawn entirely from the McNay’s collection, celebrates Paris’ monuments and marvels. Highlights include eight large-scale color lithographs by Henri Rivière, offering a soaring view of Paris from the heights of Notre-Dame. Eugène Viollet-le-Duc’s much-loved spire—which collapsed in the April fire—is hauntingly visible as it towers over the transept of the cathedral.

In the framework of Paloma, a temporary site-specific public art exhibition conceived by French creative studio Pitaya, Discovery Green presents a special programming with photography workshops on December 18 and January 15 (6:30-8pm at the Morgan reading room), a Urban Bird Walk on December 14 (4-5pm - meeting point at The Lake House Café), as well as a discussion followed by guided meditations and a short nature-journaling workshop "Mindfulness in Nature" on January 11 (11am-1pm).

DALLAS, TX | DALLAS CONTEMPORARY | JANUARY 12-MARCH 15

Opening on January 12 at Dallas Contemporary: Serenade in Not Dead by Malagasy artist Joël Andrianomearisoa. The artist, based in Antananarivo and Paris, works in a variety of media, including textiles, paper, wood, and photography, taking inspiration from space, time, Madagascar, and the wider world. From these emotional voyages he collects fabrics, which he then cuts, knots, tears, layers, and weaves, assembling these fragments into a game of materials and stories.

DALLAS, HOUSTON, AUSTIN, TX | DECEMBER 12-14

French DJ, record producer, singer, songwriter and musician Madeon will be performing at House of Blues in Dallas TX on December 12, Warehouse Live in Houston TX on December 13 and Emo's Austin TX on December 14 in the framework of its Good Faith Tour.

Madeon gained popularity by means of his video Pop Culture, which was published to YouTube and subsequently received millions of hits in its first few days of broadcast on the Internet.

 

 

HOUSTON, TX | ZILKHA HALL, HOBBY CENTER | JANUARY 16 | 8PM

Experience the grace, wit and charm of French music. The program begins and ends with early works by Saint-Saëns and Fauré that recreate the elegant atmosphere of 19th-century Parisian salons. In between, the Ravel sonata, written soon after World War I, uses just two string instruments to produce a composition of unique, austere beauty. These three inimitable works capture the essence of pure melody in its most delightfully fundamental form.

Paris-based virtuoso of the classical guitar Raphaël Feuillâtre will be performing at Emerson Unitarian Church of Houston on January 25 in the framework of a six-month tour around USA, Canada, Mexico and Japan. Winner of the highly prestigious competition Guitar Fondation of America (GFA) in 2018, Raphaël just released his second opus (Naxos Label, 2019). Tickets to be purchased on site, right before the concert.

APPLICATION DEADLINE: FEBRUARY AND MARCH 2020

Since 2016, the French Embassy offers the Community College - Bootcamps in France program: short-study abroad programs designed for Community College students.

In 2020, the French Embassy will offer 5 bootcamps in STEM and in Humanities, as well as other short programs opportunities. Bootcamp duration varies from 2 to 3 weeks. Applications are now open until February and March 2020.

Have you ever been interested in hosting a French student? The University of Houston is looking for families or individuals willing to host 1, 2 or 3 French female students during the Spring semester 2020, coming from the École des Beaux-Arts de Nantes Saint-Nazaire.

The students will arrive early January and leave at the end of May 2020, individuals or families located near the University or on an easy transit route to get there (lightrail or bus) would be ideal! Please contact us for more details.

Austin Film Society presents Jeanne Moreau: High Season, featuring a selection of masterpieces French actress Jeanne Moreau starred in from 1958-1963. Étant donnés Contemporary Art aims to strengthen ties between France and the U.S. in the field of contemporary art by fostering active collaboration and encouraging long-lasting partnerships between French visual artists, curators, and collectives and American curators and cultural institutions. The fund supports the discovery of emerging talents, while also sustaining interest in established artists. Furthermore, it has been instrumental in creating a network of curators from France and the U.S. Since its inception, Étant donnés has developed an international reputation by allocating over $3 million to fund more than 300 projects and 19 curators.

American institutions and curators, as well as French artists can apply for projects taking place between June 1, 2020 and June 30, 2021. Application deadline: January 20, 2020.

FUSED: French U.S. Exchange in Dance fosters dialogue, strengthens professional relationships, and sparks creative artistry through cultural exchanges by introducing choreographers and performers whose works had never or rarely been seen in the partner country. As such, artists founded by the program achieve international recognition and reach new audiences.

The success of this program led to its expansion: co-produced projects by artist from Africa, the Carribean and the Middle East and a French cultural institution are now eligible to the grant.

French and American institutions can apply for projects taking place between June 1, 2020 and August 31, 2021. Application deadline: February 2, 2020.

FACE Foundation, in collaboration with the Cultural Services of the French Embassy in the U.S., is pleased to launch its 2020-2021 Jazz & New Music program call for projects. The Jazz & New Music program is designed to encourage the creative and professional development of French jazz and contemporary composers, musicians and ensembles in the U.S. by funding residencies, tours, and other creative endeavors.

The Jazz & New Music Program awards three different kinds of grants: Creative Grants, Residency Grants, Touring Grants.

Applications are open for projects taking place between September 1, 2020 and August 31, 2021. Application deadline: March 2, 2020.
